Implementation of virtual reality for container terminals crane operators

Summary

This technology describes innovative approach to design virtual reality system and produce a simulation supporting terminal equipment operators in the process of Smart port container terminal operations.

Technology Description

The goal of this project idea is to apply realistic parameters of the container terminal equipment in virtual reality and to produce a simulation of a more realistic equipment management, i.e. the process of harmonizing the relationship between technological elements and technological requirements occurring in the process of container terminal operations.

The result of the proposed project will be designed virtual environment of the container terminal that will enable better training of new employees, as well as additional training (tuning and testing of knowledge of the work technology) for existing employees at container terminals.

Main advantages

Currently, there are companies offering different simulation hardware platforms. These platforms are mostly using CAVE system (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment). CAVE is a device in which screen projection on large screens creates a virtual reality experience. CAVE system has disadvantages, e.g. when handling the crane, the area beneath and around the operator is not sufficiently realistic and lacks high-quality visibility.

Solution to the problem can be by the use of the Head Mounted Display Virtual Reality (VR) system, which has been upgraded over time and has been implemented in this project as a tool used by the user when performing operations on the container terminal in virtual reality.

Stage of development

The equipment that will be used to accomplish the project idea is the HTC Vive device that is compatible with Unity Engine. System allows precise visualization and virtualization of 3D space, objects and physics of their interaction. The ability to manage all 3D objects within the created 3D space provides great flexibility for better 3D scene development. To enhance the simulation experience, it is necessary to:

  1. produce very accurate presentation of the 3D surroundings and challenges
  2. create necessary depth of perception
  3. define the outcomes of simulations and
  4. fully inform and educate user regarding equipment management

Challenge and needs

For further development of container terminal virtual reality system biggest challenge is to implement the real parameters of container terminal equipment in virtual reality and to create the realistic simulation of terminal equipment management, i.e. a presentation of the technological processes at the container terminals. To achieve these goals, it is necessary to:

  1. Optimize the system to behave according to realistic parameters of container terminal equipment
  2. Enhance the simulation experience and realistic representation of the 3D space
  3. Produce necessary depth of perception
  4. Separate individual elements of the entire terminal into smaller scenes
  5. Enhance technological processes in container terminals.

To be able to present the project idea, specially designed HMD (Head Mounted Display) VR system is needed that is driven by quality workstation.

The result of the proposed project will be designed virtual environment of the container terminal that will enable better training of new employees, as well as additional training (tuning and testing of knowledge of the work technology) for existing employees at container terminals.

The technology is not yet protected by a patent.

Potential markets and targets

Potential markets for implementation of container terminal virtual reality are the container terminals, institutions that are offering trainings for container crane operators and simulation software designers of container terminals. Proposed solution may find its application within several global markets such as:

Port container terminals are the potential partners for this idea and project. Project idea is to implement the real parameters of container terminal equipment, e.g. Port of Rijeka container terminal (Adriatic Gate Container Terminal – Rijeka) and demonstrate it in virtual reality.
